Week 44 - My favourite story by Eva Pérez

A TASTE OF THE MOON – MICHAEL GREJNIEC

I have chosen the story A taste of the moon because it reminds me a lot of my mother. She is an English teacher in a school in my town and she used to tell this story to her students.

On the other hand, it is a story that you can get a lot out of. Nowadays, I use it in my private English classes with the little ones to teach the vocabulary of animals. It is also a story that transmits values such as teamwork and respect for others.

I have tried to use one of the resources we have learned during the course Fairytales and Creativity - Nordic Chilhood. I think it is an attractive way to tell a story and to keep the interest of the audience.

Here is the link to the video of my favourite tale:

Once upon a time, there was a group of animals that wanted to find out what the taste of the moon was.

At night, when the moon was in the sky, they reached up and tried to catch it stretching their necks, legs, and arms.

But no matter how hard their tried, not even the biggest animal could reach it.

One day, the little turtle tried to climb up the highest mountain, so she could touch the moon.

From up there, the moon was closer, but the turtle couldn’t reach it.

And so, she called the elephant.

The turtle said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

As the elephant couldn’t touch the moon, he called the giraffe

The elephant said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

The giraffe stretched and stretched his neck as far as he could, but he couldn’t touch the moon.

So, he decided to call the zebra.

The giraffe said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

The zebra stretched and stretched as far as she could, but she couldn’t reach the moon either.

And so, she called the lion.

The zebra said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

The lion climbed up onto zebra’s back, but they still couldn’t touch the moon.

And so, they called the fox.

The zebra said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

Now, they could almost touch the moon, but it was moving farther and farther away.

And so, they called the monkey.

The fox said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

Now, the monkey could smell the moon, but there was no way he could touch it.

And so, he called the mouse.

The monkey said, “If you climb up onto my back, maybe we could reach the moon”.

The moon saw the mouse and thought, “I’m sure that such a tiny animal can’t touch me”.

Then, the mouse climbed up onto the turtle, the elephant, the giraffe, the zebra, the lion, the fox, the monkey, and…

With one bit, the mouse pulled off a little piece of moon.

He tasted it happily and gave some to the monkey, to the fox, to the lion, to the zebra, to the giraffe, to the elephant and to the turtle.

And the moon tasted of exactly the thing each one liked the most.

That night they slept together and live happily ever after.
